Computer Requirements

We have set up the webcast so that virtually any school with a computer and an internet connection can take part. The program is simple to take part in – if you can use and browse the internet, you can view the webcast. There are a few things, however, that you will need to be sure you have before the program to establish a connection with our ship. Note: Necessary programs can quickly and easily be downloaded for FREE. Below are the necessary hardware and software required for the eDV.
  • Computer with Windows XP or Mac OSX operating system
  • DSL or faster Internet Connection
  • QuickTime or Real Player installed on computer
  • Skype Telephony VoIP (voice-over IP) program installed on computer.
  • Computer speakers (need to be loud enough for entire classroom to hear – generally external speakers will be necessary)
  • Computer microphone
  • Projector (not required, but suggested)
(Note: Because of delays in information sharing over the public internet and spatial distances, there will be approximately a 3 second delay between the ship transmission and your class room. That is, after you finish asking a question it will take approximately 3 seconds for the instructor on the ship to hear it; and vice-versa it will take 3 seconds for you to hear an instructor’s response from the ship. This will require some slight getting used to, as you will need to be patient and ask one question at a time.)
